According to our definition, the customer and product dimensions are organised in hierarchies. A hierarchy consists of nodes. There is exactly one top node (root).

However, the hierarchies still have to be activated. This can be done by selecting the Info Object Hierarchy and selecting "Activate" from the pull-down menu that appears on clicking the right mouse button.

Activating Hierarchies

Hint: In
SAP BW, hierarchies can only be created for those characteristics
that do not refer other characteristics, i.e. only for those characteristics
for which master data exists and where the master data specified
that a hierarchy exists.
